Meva Energy’s story began in 1995 with research on biomass gasification at Luleå University of Technology and the Energy Technology Centre (ETC) in Sweden. The work led to the development of Meva’s unique cyclone gasification technology — a compact, high-efficiency method for converting biomass into renewable gas.

In 2008, Meva Energy AB was founded, acquiring the rights to the technology and establishing operations in Skellefteå. A 400 kW pilot plant was commissioned at ETC in 2009, followed by the company’s first commercial order in 2011 — a full-scale CHP plant for Pite Energi in Hortlax, Sweden.

Technological breakthroughs in 2014 increased the energy level of Meva’s syngas by 30 %, achieving one of the richest air-blown syngases ever produced. Cummins Inc. later recognized Meva’s process as the only biomass gasification system functional with lean-burn gas engines.

Following investments from InnoEnergy (2017) and leading European cleantech funds, Meva Energy established itself as a key enabler of fossil-free industrial energy. In 2020, the company achieved its commercial breakthrough by signing a renewable gas supply agreement with Sofidel, leading to the construction of a plant in Kisa, Sweden.

In 2021, IKEA Industry signed an agreement for a 2.4 MWe Meva Energy unit in Poland — expanding the company’s international footprint.

The Sofidel plant was completed in 2023, marking Meva’s first fully operational commercial facility producing renewable gas from wood residues.

A defining moment came in 2024 when Meva signed a 15-year, agreement with Elcowire, one of Europe’s leading copper manufacturers to supply 9 MW of renewable gas to their facility in Helsingborg, Sweden. The project enables the world’s first fossil-free copper production, opening an entirely new industrial segment for Meva Energy and demonstrating the technology’s potential beyond the forest and paper sectors.

The same year, a life-cycle analysis by Chalmers University confirmed that Meva’s process can achieve negative emissions (−6 g CO₂-eq/kWh) when biochar utilization is included.

Meva Energy continues to expand across Europe, developing circular, carbon-negative energy systems that replace fossil fuels in industrial production.
