Marine Plastic Waste
According to the statistics on plastic trash collected from Taiwan’s beach cleaning activities in 2019, the top three are plastic bottle caps, plastic bottles and straws. According to 2020 International Costal Cleanup Report, the top ten marine wastes are mostly plastic wastes. Having these data quantified, we know that the straws collected from the beach are enough for 322 octopuses to drink eight smoothies a day for a year; and the plastic cutlery is enough to serve a three-course meal to 66,000 sharks.
By presenting these quantified data, it is our aspiration that people will see how considerable the amount of plastic trash is waste. Currently, the plastic pollution issue has become even more critical day by day. Although many plastic products claim to be recyclable, not all of them can be well recycled for repeated uses. By taking plastic bottle as an example, although its recycling rate is as high as 95% in Taiwan, about over 280 million bottles failed to be recycled in 2018, causing an excessive burden on the environment.
Therefore, recycling these marine plastic wastes and reproduce them into a recyclable plastic product is our ultimate mission. And effectively and unceasingly reuse plastics will be our permanent goal.
