While some water treatment plants are meant to simply make the sludge safe enough to dispose of, most facilities continue to treat the sludge so that the material can be put to good use in their communities. Once sludge is treated and processed to meet EPA safety standards for productive use, the resulting nutrient-rich organic material is termed as biosolids.
