ENVEA develops multi-component gas analysis for carbon capture pilot

Background
Carbon Capture (CC) is the cornerstone for achieving net zero emissions in heavy industry. For sectors responsible for the largest share of global CO₂ output, including power generation, carbon capture offers a practical and scalable route to decarbonization.
When a major global energy provider sought gas analysis expertise, they contacted ENVEA for support having already worked together for many years managing Continuous Emissions Monitoring Systems (CEMS).
Reliable measurement data is critical to ensuring efficient CCS, safeguarding operations, and meeting tightening environmental regulations.
The Challenge
The objective was clear but technically demanding due to the nature of the hot and complex gas matrix environment.
The customer required a gas analysis system capable of assessing the effectiveness of pilot scale testing:
- Air Matrix gas control at the inlet and outlet. Multi parameter monitoring including O₂, CO, NOx, SO₂ – plus introduction of amines to the gas library (MEA- Mono Ethylene Amine/ MDEA – Methyl DiEthanol Amine) as well as some specific compounds (PZ- Piperazine / AMP – Adenosine MonoPhosphate)
- CO₂ matrix – Air purity
The system needed to deliver high quality data across multiple test points at different temperature (50°C or 190°C), while remaining responsive to changing experimental conditions.
ENVEA was responsible for delivering full system integration. ENVEA collaborated to provide advanced analyzer configuration, measurement solution validation, and specialist technical expertise throughout the project.
Solution
ENVEA designed and delivered a comprehensive solution that provides clarity and confidence within the Carbon Capture process.
The modular system with a flex-hose sampling device offered flexibility to temporary test at numerous ports within the testing rig.
- Optimize the capture process and maintain stable operation through accurate inlet gas characterization.
- Verify process safety and compliance by monitoring exhaust gases to environmental regulatory standards.
- Prevent process inefficiency by detecting solvent leakage, and tracking by-products formed through the carbon capture process
- Confirm CO₂ purity meets the best quality for transport, use, or long-term underground storage.
This project represented the energy provider’s first initiative in the field of carbon capture and a flagship program for its industrial emissions research laboratory.
During an onsite system review, ENVEA’s engineers demonstrated the system’s responsiveness by adjusting settings to respond to temperature changes as testing conditions evolved. This ability to adapt in real time was highly valued by the customer, reinforcing confidence in both the measurement approach and the strength of the collaboration.
