Photolithography is a key process in the manufacture of many electronic components, and photoresist is one of the key materials for fine pattern processing in microelectronics technology. Photoresists are widely used in the flat panel display (FPD) industry, from liquid crystal display (LCD) microchips and nanochips to high-definition displays in light-emitting diode (LED) or organic light-emitting diode (OLED) structures.

A FPD is an electronic display used to display visual content such as text or images, including LCD, OLED, Micro-LED, electrochromic display (ECD), and plasma display panel (PDP). LCDs are by far the most prevalent FPD in use today. The specific applications of photoresist in these FPDs also vary due to the different types of FPDs.

As the most common type of FPD, LCD uses liquid crystals in its primary form of operation and cold cathode fluorescent (CCFL) as a backlight. It is made with either a passive matrix or an active matrix display grid and has millions of liquid pixels.

OLED displays are made of organic materials for converting electrical current into light, with each pixel capable of producing its own illumination. So they work without a backlight. The features of OLEDs are exceptional picture quality, fast response, and wide viewing angles. Besides, they are thinner and lighter than LCDs.
