Green Streets@Haringey Retrofitting SuDS Study - Case Study
Haringey, UK
Greater London Authority, London Borough of Haringey Complete
AECOM was commissioned by the Greater London Authority (GLA) to produce a pilot Sustainable Drainage Systems (SuDS) retrofitting study. This was to include conceptual retrofit sustainable drainage designs for one of two existing communities currently at risk of flooding.
AECOM initially undertook a strategic level assessment of the communities to enable the GLA to select one community of two to be involved in delivering a SuDS study. It was found that retrofit was possible at Campsbourne Estate within the London Borough of Haringey. This process is capable of regenerating the area, which has lacked sufficient investment for years.
We designed a programme of short, medium and long term retrofit schemes which would cost a total of approximately £3m, being phased over a number of years and tied into the regeneration programme for the estate.
It was found that our SuDS retrofit designs bring a range of benefits, reducing stormwater runoff to the existing combined sewer system by up to 45%. Additionally, the design potentially improves the amenity value of the urban estate, increases property prices and biodiversity whilst also reducing the urban heat island effect.
AECOM delivered within strict and non-negotiable timescales and designed a number of retrofit SuDS features throughout the Campsbourne Estate, including:
- Bio retention tree pits
- Rain gardens
- Green roofs
- Permeable paving
Key Features
