Keeping Septic Systems Functioning With Regular Septic Pumping

Jan. 7, 2022

Septic pumping is not something that has to be done every year, and for more homes with three to five people, it only needs to be completed every three or four years. If there are more people in the home, it may need to be pumped earlier, but there are other factors to consider in addition to just the number of people using the system.

Septic tanks are essentially a mini-water treatment system for residential properties without a connection to a municipal sewer system. The tanks, which are underground, hold the wastewater coming from the home. In most homes, this includes what is known as the “black water” which is typically water from toilets and sinks, as this water contains organic materials.

This water travels through the sewer pipes in the home and runs into the septic tank. There are bacteria living in the tank that break down the solid material, which sinks to the bottom of the tank. The grease and lighter materials stay on the top, but there is also some breakdown of this light, floating layer.

While the solid materials at the bottom are broken down, there is still residual matter. Over time, this layer of sludge at the bottom of the tank, and the floating layer on the top get thicker, which limits the amount of wastewater from the house the tank can process.

This slowdown in the system causes drains to slow down, toilets to fail to flush and eventually wastewater can back up into drains, showers, bathtubs, toilets and other plumbing fixtures attached to the sewer lines. At the same time, the solids an also create blockages in the field lines, reducing the efficiency of the system.

Regular septic pumping by Aqua-Zyme every three years can prevent this backup and any costly issues that go along with it. Our technicians can provide additional information to you once they arrive and are able to see if there are other factors to consider.
