Stray and contact voltage detection - Case Study
Reducing risks to public safety by detecting signs of cable degradation that leads to stray and contact voltage. February 2022, two people were injured when a jolt of stray electricity killed a service dog as the dog stepped on a charged metal plate.
In 2021, utility reported they found more than 1,300 instances of stray voltage throughout their network.
In 2021, 32 locations were reported to have shocked pedestrians and pets, resulting in the death of several animals.
The utility surveys its entire system — which includes 94K miles of underground cables; and 278K manholes, service boxes and transformer vaults — several times a year.
Problem
High levels of stray voltage over 100V detected by Sentir after pattern of increased gas and temperature.
Solution
Customer was alerted of hazardous conditions by SensorCore automated monitoring.
Response
Field crew found exposed cables which were cut and patched to mitigate further safety risks.
Results
- Reduce risk of injuries to public through proactive response
- Improve maintenance by prioritizing high risk locations
Cables exposed to harsh winters, salt and year-round flooding results in cable degradation
