TITAN MBR - Food Processing - Case Study

One of the world’s leading producers of macadamia nuts produces more than 15 million pounds each year from its Hawaii processing plant. Producing the nuts is a rather meticulous process that involves multiple steps, including collection, high-strength cracking, cleaning and dehydration. High-strength wastewater is primarily generated from the nut-cleaning stage, in this case more than 10,000 gallons per day (38 CMD) with 2,500 mg/L BOD and suspended solids greater than 1,000 mg/L resulting from shell residuals collected in the cleaning process.

In order to meet wastewater treatment permitting for a plant expansion, the nut producer installed a packaged membrane bioreactor (MBR) wastewater treatment system from Smith & Loveless Inc.
