Civil Engineering - Roads
Chautauqua County in New York had a huge scrap tire problem. Numerous illegal tire dumps within the county threatened the environment and the people around it, something had to be done. After searching the internet, the county found information on the tire baler and liked the beneficial use of the end product. The county, being a public entity, placed a bid for a tire baler, Encore Systems, Inc. won the competitive bidding process and the county purchased one of their tire balers. The county utilized county jail inmates to bale the tires. By the year 2000 the county baled over 400,000 tires hassle free and with outstanding performance reports on the machinery.
Civil Engineering - Erosion
The City of Carlsbad, New Mexico and the County in which it resides were trying to find a way to deal with tire disposal at their landfill. The tires were taking up too much room! The City reviewed tire recycling options and decided to purchase a tire baler with a grant from the State of New Mexico. Encore Systems, Inc. was awarded a competitive bid to provide tire balers for the State of New Mexico.
Civil Engineering - The End Product
The finished block weighs approximately 1 ton and measures 30"x 50"x 60" and contains 100 whole passenger and light truck tires. The tire bales are fastened together with five 9 gauge Square-Lok galvanized or stainless steel baling wires. This is now the industry standard for tirebales in civil engineering. The tire bales inability to hold water eliminates the public health threat from mosquitoes. The decreased surface area, density of the bale, and lack of air greatly reduces the risk of fire. Volume reduction of 5 to 1 is another advantage of baling for increased storage space and efficient transportation benefits.
