Berberis (Berberis vulgaris) and Golden seal (Hydrasis canadensis) contain berberine, which has anti protozoic properties. Protozoans which cause diarrhea include Giardia lamblia and cryptosporidium and bacteria such as Campylobacter, Salmonella, Shigella and Escherichia coli. Both berberine and palmatine are active ingredients in Berberis and have anti bacterial properties and Hydrasis Canadensis helps to reduce adhesive E.coli while it stimulates the immune system.
