The main goal of this project funded by the Italian regional Government is to develop and test prototype analyzers for routine laboratory use and for on-line application to measure algal toxins in fresh and coastal water.
An automated method for the quantitative detection of micrcystins in surface water, to be applied in the above mentioned prototype analyzers in under development.
A New Tool for In-Situ Analysis is Implemented On an Automated Buoy in the Mediterranean Sea
Continuous monitoring of highly dynamic systems like coastal waters requires frequent sampling in a precise place in order to catch short-term events that might have a strong impact on the ecosystem, such as exceptional phytoplankton blooms or changes caused by storms. The lack of monitoring systems that provide continuous observations of the marine environment, especially

Several methods exist for determining nitrate in aqueous solutions. However, the most commonly performed USEPA-approved methods are problematic and can be unreliable. USEPA methods 353.1 nitrate Hydrazine Reduction1,2 and 353.2 nitrate Cadmium Reduction3 utilize chemicals that are carcinogenic and highly toxic. Hazardous waste is generated when performing these methods and disposal is costly. Other methods performed by ion chromatography (IC)4,5 and ion selective electrode (ISE)6
