Model YESDAQ Database & Display System Brochure

DATABASE AND DISPLAYSYSTEMMODEL YESDAQBULLETIN YDAQ-1General DescriptionYESDAQ software for MS-Windows NT/2000/XPsupports the collection, database storage and webpresentation of instrument data. It lets TSI and RSSusers both view and analyze historical data.YESDAQ fully automates the retrieval, processing, and display of data from one or more instruments viathe Internet. It supports data collection from multiple§ TSI-880 Total Sky Imagers§ Rotating Shadowband Spectroradiometers§ Automated Radiosonde Launchers§ Vaisala Model CT-25K ceilometersYESDAQ is designed to meet the needs of theprofessional meteorological environmental datacollection network. It is built around sophisticatedstandards such as TCP/IP networking forcommunication with remote systems, helping youleverage your organization’s existing Internetcommunication infrastructure. Because it automatesall data collection and presentation processing, itfrees you to perform the important tasks of dataanalysis and interpretation.Features§ Schedule-driven instrument data collection§ Web server component that provides display tousers via a web user interface (WUI)§ Advanced MySQLTM open source database§ Supports large and reliable data storage capacityvia the NTFS file system§ “Clientless” web browser interface permitsadministration from anywhere on the Internet§ ODBC driver allows export of live data to 3rd partyMS-Windows user programs§ Native C, Java JDBC and Perl interfaces§ Data re-processing services supports re-analysisof stored data using alternate algorithm settings§ Data replication services permits multipleYESDAQ databases to be synchronized acrossTCP/IP links, or via a static CD-ROM file system"snapshot image"§ On-demand animation of TSI data via quick viewanmations or day-long MPEG-1 moviesYESDAQ/DVE Showing TSI data via the web.Applications§ Numerical Weather Prediction model input§ Remote environmental monitoring§ Surface transportation weather§ Long term environmental research§ Physical security and site monitoringCore Database TechnologyYESDAQ is standards-based and uses non-proprietary components including SQL and theApache web server. In this era of rapid technologicalchange, you can trust your data to YESDAQ and itsunderlying open source database technology.YESDAQ’s architecture rests on a powerfulMySQLTM database. The database is open sourcetechnology and thus well-tested and supported. It isalso expandable as your network grows and younever have to worry that your data are locked up insome "proprietary format".Data Visualization EngineOn top of the MySQLTM database sits the DataVisualization Engine a layer that permits rapidviewing of stored data for supported instruments.YESDAQ can support hundreds or thousands ofremote stations. The DVE provides end users with“self-service” rapid access to data both visually asgraphs and as ASCII tables. (For a live demo of thistechnology please visit our web site athttp://www.yesinc.com/)Data ManagementManaging many sites for an extended period of timecan create a large data file repository of many GB.At that size data management issues becomesignificant. YESDAQ system logs store errors thatcan arise from misconfigurations or periodic TCP/IPcommunications link problems. Data pruning canalso be performed to either migrate data to tape orpermanently purge it from the database.Automated Data Collection LinksInstrument data needs a pathway from remotesystems into the central YESDAQ database. Withthe rapid growth of the Internet, TCP/IP provides areliable and flexible solution and eliminates problemsinherent with telephone modems (droppedconnections, garbled data from random line noise, etc.) YESDAQ relies upon TCP/IP communicationsagents, called links, to periodically poll remoteinstruments via the Internet. Each link type islicensed to a specific instrument; YESDAQinstallation ships with at least one link, but you canadd more as your network of instruments grows. Asophisticated scheduler that can handle thecollection of multiple remote sites simultaneouslydrives the collection engine. As data files aregathered, each is automatically checked fortruncation or other common transmission errors. Aretry is performed if any errors are encountered. Dataare stored in SQL tables for later presentation, anddepending on the site-polling interval, YESDAQ canpresent near-real-time data to remote users via theweb.DSM-LinkRemote sites that do not have Internet connectionscan be supported by the optional miniature solidstate Data Storage Module (DSM). DSMs permit upto 420 MB of local instrument data storage andpermit collection of data from remote sites over anextended period of time. They can be “hot-swapped”from running instruments and brought to a network-connected laptop or desktop PC equipped with aPCMCIA Type I or II slot. Once a DSM is inserted inthe PC, DSM-link software transfers data directly toa YESDAQ database (which can be installed on thelocal machine or anywhere on the Internet). DSM-linkthen clears the DSM module for reuse; several DSMssupport round-robin use in networks wheretechnicians can only visit remote sites periodically.DVE-produced daily MPEG movie of TSI imagesSystem Requirements§ Operating systems NT4, 2000 (pro), XP (pro)§ 200 MHz (or faster) CPU, 128 MB RAM§ Storage: NTFS with fast disk subsystem.Depending on how many instruments you plan tosupport, disk storage requirements will vary, e.g.30Mb/day for a TSI-880 or RSS§ Networking: TCP/IP Ethernet; 10/100BaseT§ Backup: Network tape backup is mandatory.Use of St. Bernard’s Open File Manager is highlyrecommended.§ DSM slot: PCMCIA type I or II slot (this slot canbe located on another networked PC)Note: Although the MySQLTM database itself is opensource, it is licensed by YES to a specific end user.YESDAQ itself is not sold under the open sourcelicense.Copyright Ó 2003 Yankee Environmental Systems, Inc.
