We will provide yourfilters in sealed packages or loaded into cassettes, ready for sampling.Filters are the sampling devices used to capture aerosols –mists and particulate matter – from the air. A filter can beused alone, when an aerosol is the only component ofinterest, or in combination with a sorbent tube, in the samesampling train, when both aerosol and vapor componentsare present, such as when sampling for polynuclear aro-matic hydrocarbons. An untreated filter captures analytesof interest simply by trapping (absorbing) them in the filtermatrix. Analytes drawn into a treated filter (chemicallycoated/impregnated) are derivatized by the chemical agentto a more stable or more easily analyzed compound. Manysampling methods that call for a treated filter evolved fromeffective, but more cumbersome, impinger sampling meth-ods, which trapped analytes of interest by bubbling the airsample through a liquid medium.
