Activated carbon has a fine microstructure (not uniform) with a large number of very fine pores. Commercially available activated carbon types have an internal surface of 500 to 1500 m2 / g. The activated carbon particles (carbon atoms) attract gases or liquid particles (molecules) that surround or flow through the activated carbon.

How strong this attraction is depends on various factors, for example due to the shape and size of the molecules that come into contact with the activated carbon. Because not all molecules are attracted and retained equally, by activated carbon,  it is possible to remove unwanted substances from air, gas or water.

Activated carbon is a collection of various pores, the size and mutual relationships of which are determined by the raw material used and the activation method. In principle, all fiber-containing materials can be used as raw material such as peanut shells, rice, bones, coconuts, fruit seeds, coal and wood.
