Silos for cement and bulk materials of a standard type are used when receiving and storing bulk materials - cement, sand, lime, gypsum, etc., their further distribution and dosage.

The stored product is fed into the cement storage silo by means of a pneumatic feeder from a cement truck, which is then discharged through an auger or air pump. The process of supplying can also be carried out through an inclined belt conveyor and a loading pipeline with a pump.

An air filter and a service hatch are installed at the top of the cement silo. On the roof there is a gallery with pipelines, filters and switches. The cone of the lower part has a special out-loading valve. The metal support legs of large-capacity silos rise above the railroad tracks, where the scales are in stalled. Then the cement is loaded into wagons or motor vehicles.

The main material for the manufacture of cement silo is steel of various grades corresponding to the conditions of the area of its installation , coated with a protective anti-corrosion compound. The thickness of the parts of the cement silo varies from 6 to 10 mm.

When using a silo for storage of cement in areas with low winter temperatures, its insulation is applied from the outside.

The design process begins with a technical specification, determining the volume of cement storage, the level of mechanization, the material for manufacturing silo structures.

• the temporary long-term load (weight of cement, its friction against the silo structures, weight of pneumatic conveying, filters, etc.);
• the short-term load.

In addition, steel cement silos are checked for stability, taking into account temperature fluctuations.

To begin developing a design of foundations, data from geological and hydro-geological studies are needed. The type of foundation is determined by the calculation. More often, a concrete monolithic slab with reinforcement is performed. On rocky soils, stand-alone strip or precast foundations are designed. The foundation on piles is designed if the soils have sediment.
