Echelon Contech StormFilter - Media Based Filtration Device
The Stormwater Management StormFilter® is a media-based filtration device, utilizing patented rechargeable cartridges to trap and absorb particulate and dissolved contaminants, such as suspended solids, hydrocarbons, nutrients, metals and other common pollutants. The StormFilter comes in multiple configurations and can include a regulatory approved internal by-pass weir to avoid the need for multiple structures. The StormFilter has multiple media options including Phosphosorb® which was specially developed to target the removal of both dissolved and particulate phosphorus.
The StormFilter is one of the oldest and most reliable treatment systems in the marketplace. With over 20 years of proven performance, 200,000 cartridges installed and approvals from all leading regulatory agencies the StormFilter is a performance leader in servicing markets with stringent stormwater regulations.
As a storm event subsides, the water level in the vault will decrease but a hanging water level will remain inside the cartridges due to the siphon action. When the water level in the vault reaches the bottom off the cartridge hoods air will rush in through scrubbing regulators creating a natural agitation of the media surface allowing captured material to drop to the vault floor. The patented surface cleaning mechanism refreshes the media surface for the next storm event. The treated water leaves the StormFilter from the outlet bay through the outlet pipe.

- DESIGN FLEXIBILITY – Can be designed to treat small and large flow rates
- MULTIPLE MEDIA TYPES – Numerous media choices to customize site specific contaminant removal.
- HIGH SURFACE AREA – All media is used evenly to allow for effective removal of contaminates.
- BUILT IN PEAK BYPASS – Customizable configurations including peak diversion to provide offline-style bypass within a single structure.
- MULTIPLE CARTRDIGE DEPTS – Varying cartridge heights available to meet site constraints and shallow applications.
- BUBBLE AGITATION – Self-cleaning mechanism prolong cartridges life
- CARTRIDGE REPLACEMENT – Cartridges can be refilled with new media as necessary
- MAINTENANCE – Easy access for inspection and maintenance.
- LAND SPACE – Underground system maximizes available land space on site.
- EASY INSTALLATION – Pre-casted structure comes assembled with filter cartridges to the jobsite ensuring simple and fast installation.
Site specific pollutants can be targeted using a combination of the most effective medias for each contaminant. StormFilter media options include PhosphoSorb, Perlite, CSF, Zeolite, and GAC.
The two commonly used media are Perlite and PhosphoSorb. Perlite media is composed of expanded volcanic rock with porous structure with sharp edges to trap and remove solids, oil and grease. While the PhosphSorb media is composed of engineered perlite base material designed to remove total phosphorus (TP) by removing both dissolved and particulate phosphorus.
The StormFilter is available in the following options:
- STORMFILTER MANHOLE – For designs requiring less than nine cartridges the StormFilter can be provided in a round manhole.
- STORMFILTER VAULT – Standard precast vault sizes range from 2.4m x 1.8m to 2.4m x 7.5m
- STORMFILTER PEAK DIVERSION (SFPD) – The SFPD configuration systems are single pre-cast vault system with built-in high flow bypass.
- STORMFILTER CAST-IN-PLACE (SFCIP) – The SFCIP configuration systems are designed to work within buildings and in combination with stormwater quantity control. Offering large flexibility, the systems can be designed in any configuration to fit structural and mechanical constraints. Echelon Environmental project mangers and engineers will work together with the client and consulting engineer to design a custom solution, offering support from inception to construction.
StormFilter has been verified by some of the most stringent stormwater technology evaluation organizations in North America, including:
- Canadian Environmental Technology Verification (ETV)
- Washington State Department of Ecology (TAPE) GULD – Basic, Phosphorus
- New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP)
StormFIlter is used to provide stringent stormwater quality control (solids, nutrients, hydrocarbons, and metals) in numerous applications including:
- PARKING LOTS – Commercial, Industrial, and Institutions
- RESIDENTIAL – Medium and High-density (Condominiums)
- INDUSTRIAL YARDS – Maintenance facilities and corporation yards
- MUNICIPAL – Roadways, bridges, transit facilities
- TREATMENT – Pre-treatment to detention/infiltration, bioretention, rainwater harvesting systems, and Low Impact Development designs.
