Because Ozone does not depend on water temperature or pH to react, washing can be done in cold water with better results. In addition, Ozone quickly reacts with organics and reverts to Oxygen. So it does not degrade linens and other fabrics throughout the wash cycle. So linens and other fabrics not only last longer but are fluffier and feel better on the skin.
What is Ozone?
Ozone (O3) is a highly-reactive form of Oxygen (O2) produced by Ozone Generators. Ozone is a direct replacement for chlorine, bleach, detergents and other chemical-based oxidizers. It provides superior cleaning power and disinfection. It has been in continual use in Europe for over a century. It is the fastest-acting oxidizer in commercial use today.
Because Ozone is produced from Oxygen, it is environmentally-friendly and the costs to produce it are minimal. It is a superior oxidizer and disinfectant.
What Industries Use Ozone?
Many large cities including Los Angeles, Montreal and Houston use Ozone in their water treatment plants as an oxidizer and disinfectant. It is also used in industries ranging from computer chip manufacturing to odor control to food and chemical processing plants to commercial laundry operations.
Isn’t Ozone like Smog?
Ozone produced from Ozone Generators is not like the smog-based Ozone. We use 93-95% pure Oxygen to produce clean, useable highly-reactive Ozone for use in laundry systems and other applications.
Why Ozone in Laundry?
Unlike chemical-based oxidizers, Ozone reacts very quickly with organics. While chemicals degrade all materials (including your linens), Ozone quickly attacks organics such as dirt, bacteria, germs and other organic materials. And unlike chlorine or bleaches, it does not break down into caustic byproducts. It merely reverts to Oxygen.
Besides being a powerful detergent Ozone is also a superior disinfectant and will kill germs, bacteria and viruses much more quickly than chlorine or bleach. Unlike chlorine, Ozone kills pathogens through direct reaction and not through a slow poisoning process.
So fecal materials, blood, mucous and other organic materials that harbor pathogens are quickly broken down, disinfected and flushed. How is Ozone added to your Washers?
Ozone is a gas and is produced with Ozone Generators. This gas must be transferred to the incoming wash water, which provides oxidation and disinfection. Unlike other systems, Airtrona systems add Ozone continuously to the wash cycles.Any excess Ozone/Oxygen is vented safely outdoors. The Ozone injector carries out the initial gas transfer and then Ozone is added throughout the wash cycle with two-point injection.
Unique Two-Point Injection System
Airtrona systems use a unique two-point injection system. Because Ozone is highly reactive the initial Ozone in the wash water is quickly used up. To replenish the Ozone throughout the wash cycle, Ozone is then re-injected into the washer well to keep the wash water continually charged with Ozone. This means that Ozone is available and functioning throughout the wash cycle.
Health and Safety Issues
There are Occupational Health and Safety limits for exposure to Ozone. We use an Ozone Monitor in the equipment room to ensure there are no leaks in the system and any excess Ozone from the washers is safely vented outdoors.
