Rectangular grit separators, both aerated and non-aerated, are commonly used in wastewater treatment systems. Scraper systems are used to remove the solid material that settles at the bottom of these grit separators. Scrapers moving bi-directionally along the grit separator push the grit into a chute at the bottom of the channel, from where it is removed from the tank by air-lift or submersible pumps. This sludge, mixed with water, is usually passed through a grit washing or separation unit to remove organic matter and is collected in grit containers and transported out of the facility. Grit separator scrapers can be configured to scrape one, two, three, or four channels. In smaller facilities, the grit washing unit can be mounted on the scraper bridge.
