Genius5 - Model C14 -Sampling System

The gas is sucked over a cartridge, filled with absorbent, which samples humidity and CO2 in a quantitative way. Long term sampling is done over a periode of 2 weeks up to 1 month. In 1 month, the CO2 content of 0,5 ml/min x 80 min x 24 hours x 30 days = 21,6 liters of flue gas is extracted. With 10% CO2 and 20% H2O, 4,4 g of CO2, dependent on proportional factor, is sampled in 1 cartridge. While the sampling periode the operator registers alternative and biomass fuels with amount and specification,to calculate the reference pmC valuefor 100% biomass.

Measurement of the biomass fraction (BF)

After the measurement periode, the cartridges are sent to Genius5-Instruments, where the cartridge is weighted and the absorbent is removed and packed in a sealed bottle. New abssorbentmixture is inserted to the cartridge. Allof these processes are done in a glove box with very low CO2 levels to ensure low blanks.

The 14C laboratory evaluates the sample with high accelleration mass spectrometry and calculates the biogenic fraction, based on the reference 105 pmC = 100% biogenic. Typical accuracy of the pmC result is within 0,3 %.

Based on the fuel specifications and measured fuel amounts from standard methodology,the reference pmC (100% biogenic = pmC) is calculated summing up all of the fuels with their portion and individual pmC value, based on age and year of harvest.

Fuel cell leak test

Because of the use of hydrogen, fuel cells need a highly accurate leak test. For all of our sampling systems we have developped a very accurate leaktest.We have developed the Genius5 Leak with the focus to do leak tests only. This device can be used to do a leaktest for fuel cells, their components and the piping system. The loss is calculated in Pa/min or ml/min.  Simple and clever for more safety.

Green energy calculation - biogenic power rate

Carbon atoms have 3 isotops, with mass 12, 13 and 14. Cosmic radiation creates C¹⁴  in the atmosphere. Recent CO₂ carbon sources (age < 100 years), like biomass have a C¹⁴ level that is equal the average C¹⁴ value of the atmosphere. Fossile CO₂ sources (age > 600.000 years) have a C¹⁴ level of zero.

To measure the biogenic fraction of CO2 sources, the PmCTrace extracts a representative sample from the stack, proportional to the stack gas velocity. It can be used for short time sampling as well as to sample over 1 month.

After 1 month sampling, the cartridge is transported to a C¹⁴ laboratory, where the sample is evaluated for pmc value (parts of modern carbon).

Own developments

We have developed a method,where the age of the biomass is included in the reference value for 100% biomass, to increase the accuracy, especially in the range of 90% biomass and higher. We have developed a cartridges, which is simple and safe to transport and safe and reliable in use.

Long time experience

The PmcTrace was developed 8 years ago. It was validated at several cement plants 5 years ago. 3 years ago, Genius5-Instruments was founded to produce and distribute the PmCtrace for the purpose of green enery calculation, to push the use of green energy.The present owner has 24 years experience with the design and installation of long term sampling systems and sampling cartridges in
