FromPanton McLeod
Drinking water often contains benign concentrations of Fe and Mn ions in solution. These metal ions are nutrients for certain bacteria naturally residing on the wetted surfaces of the distribution system. When ingested by the bacteria, the ions form a very hard black and brown encrustation on these surfaces, typically within tanks, towers, filters, well screens and pipelines. If left to build, these encrustations have a deleterious effect on the taste of the water as well as making the residual chlorine levels difficult to control within the system.
