Very often the electricity supply to a property is at a higher voltage level than needed. This results in excessive energy consumption, high electricity bills and reduced lifespan of appliances using the energy. In fact Intel Corporation carried out a power optimisation study in 1997. The study revealed that an 8.9% reduction in voltage on their microprocessors achieved a reduction of 20% in the power consumption.
The IEE (Institution of Electrical Engineers) have also carried out a study into over voltage and found that a 230V linear appliance used on a 240V supply will take 4.3% more current and will consume almost 9% more energy and only achieve 55% of its rated life.
