API Removal Solution
InOpSys offers a comprehensive solution for the removal of Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients (API) from industrial side streams, addressing the pressing issue of Pharmaceuticals in the Environment (PIE). With the pharmaceutical industry's significant contributions to global health, it also poses environmental challenges due to API contamination. InOpSys tackles this with a specialized hybrid technology sequence designed to treat API residues in production and formulation wash water. This innovative approach minimizes energy usage, unlike conventional methods such as incineration or mono technologies like electro oxidation. The system targets the efficient reduction of complex matrices to below detection limits, ensuring adherence to EU pollution regulations. Through selective and energy-efficient processes, including tailored solutions for high-potency APIs like steroids, InOpSys provides both standardized and customized strategies to effectively manage API pollution.
Actively avoiding Pharmaceuticals in the Environment (PIE)
Our proven path to successful removal of Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients (API) from side streams.
Modern medicine has transformed global health, enabling longer lifespans, quicker recoveries, and effective management of diseases that were once considered fatal. For this progress, we can be truly grateful. However, the expanding pharmaceutical industry has brought an unintended challenge: Pharmaceuticals in the Environment (PIE). This growing concern threatens both natural ecosystems and human health.
Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients (APIs) enter the environment primarily through three pathways:
- Manufacturing
- Usage
- Disposal
Of these, manufacturing contributes the least, while usage and disposal account for the majority of API release.
Under current EU regulations, the pollution caused by end-users is addressed through the polluter pays principle. At the same time, manufacturing and formulation sites are also obligated to minimize PIE. During API production and formulation, wash water often carries traces of APIs into wastewater systems. Currently, most of this wastewater is managed through incineration – an energy-intensive, expensive, and unsustainable solution.
We are capable of treating APIs at various stages throughout the production process. For instance, explore our tailored solution for steroid removal early in the production chain. This approach was specifically designed to address the high potency of this particular API.
For other scenarios, we have developed standardized solutions, such as combinations designed to remove a broad spectrum of pharmaceuticals effectively.
This standardized combination approach is based on our hybrid sequence of technologies, with each step playing a crucial role in efficiently reducing the APIs in the complex matrix to below detection limits.
