There are typically two ways to make sure data is completely eradicated and cannot be recovered. One is to degauss the media and the other is to re-write over the existing data, full length, every track, and every bit position. Media products such as 3480, 3490e, 8mm, DLT, and SDLT can be degaussed and the media reused. However, LTO, 3590, 3592, 9840, 9940, and T-10000 cannot be degaussed without destroying the servo track(s). For these media types, Certification requires data destruction using modern methods which do not destroy the servo tracks.
