One of the fundamental ideas of the filter design is to use both air and water with back flushing. This gives a reduced total consumption of flushing water and a reduced instantaneous flushing water flow rate. Therefore a reduced wastewater flow from the works can also be used. Our filter design gives guaranteed effective and even clean flushing over the whole filter bed. Flushing with air/water compared with flushing with water alone has a powerful mechanical effect on the sand particles and the accumulated contaminants. For this reason a separate surface flushing system is not required. Moreover, the sand bed stays homogeneous the whole time, resulting in a higher sludge retention capacity compared with a water flushed filter. The filter design can also be adapted to give a 2-media filter, activated-carbon filter or alkaline filter.
