Remediation
Prior to commencing a remedial program, full site assessment and contaminant characterization is required in order to understand the complexities of the problem to enable the development of potential remedial strategies. Site assessment and contaminant characterization consists of determining:
the nature and magnitude of the contaminants
environmental situation (surrounding matrices)
extent of contamination
contaminant fate and transport
potential environmental receptors
regulatory clean-up requirements and targets
Upon completion of the above, a site specific remedial program can be implemented using proven remedial strategies or the results of bench scale studies for innovative projects. Options for typical remedial strategies include:
- Excavation and disposal of contaminated media
- Application of soil amendments
- Stabilization and encapsulation
- In-situ bioremediation
- Ex-situ bioremediation
- Pump and treat
- Soil vapour extraction
- Multi-phase vacuum extraction
- Phytoremediation
- Soil washing
