Ships: floating fossil power plants with emissions to air as for land-based power plants. The UN agency IMO has issued rules (the MARPOL convention) on the limitation of ship emissions into the ambient air. Among other things, nitrogen oxides (NOX) and sulfur (sulfur dioxide, SO2) are regulated. OPSIS has the instruments to monitor the ...

Air pollution at regional and national scales. It is important to monitor air pollution where many people stay, i.e. in cities and especially at street level. In order to better understand where the pollution comes from, a so-called background monitoring may also be needed. Then the monitoring station is placed in the countryside, at a great distance from obvious sources of the ...

In recent years, increasingly strict requirements have been introduced to minimise sulfur emissions from shipping. One way to comply is to run the ships with low-sulfur oil, but this can be expensive. An alternative that makes it possible to continue using high-sulfur oil as fuel is to install SO2 scrubbers that clean the flue gases to the same level as if the ships were fueled with low-sulfur oil. However, the scrubbers must be monitored by measuring the ratio of SO2 to CO2 concentrations. Here, OPSIS has a ...

Hydrogen is traditionally produced by water electrolysis (H2O ↔ ½ O2+ H2) , but can be also produced by methane pyrolysis (CH4↔ C + 2 H2) using for example ScanArc´s plasma technology as heat source. The efficiency of the pyrolysis reaction is highest at temperatures above app. 1000 C. To produce hydrogen by pyrolysis it takes “only” 38 kJ of energy per 1 mol of produced H2 compared to 286 kJ of energy needed when using water ...

Most large coal fired power plants and combustion processes are required to monitor CO, NO and NO2 (NOx), SO2 and possibly CO2; in addition the analyser has to be normalised to Standard conditions. For this application CODEL offers the five channel GCEM 40 series which uses Infrared absorption to measure these gases plus moisture, pressure and temperature. The analyser can be configured for single channel operation to monitor any of these gases plus CH4 and ...

Closed chamber gas flux measurements can be made with Protea FTIR analysers to allow researchers in the field of atmospheric gas analysis from agricultural and livestock to measure evolved gases such as N2O, CO2, CO, NH3, and CH4. Nitrous oxide (N2O) and Methane (CH4) emissions from soil, plant and livestock are especially important gases to measure, given their high potential as greenhouse gases (GHGs). NH3, whilst not a greenhouse gas on the scale of N2O, CH4 and CO2, is a major emission from agricultural, such ...

OPO-based photoacoustic spectroscopy (PAS) provides ultimately fast and sensitive trace gas analysis The photoacoustic infrared spectroscopy (PAS) is a very promising technology for trace gas detection and analysis in environmental or atmospheric monitoring, industrial process control or medical diagnostics. PAS is based on exciting rotational and vibrational states of gas-molecules with infra-red light pulses. The absorbed energy translates into kinetic energy pulses, which form an acoustic wave that can ...
